Signs Of Desperation

These days, some politicians are willing to compromise to any extent with their dignity and stature when it comes to grabbing the prized chair of a ministership. This was visible during the formation of the Manmohan Singh government last week.

Eavesdropper learns that when the cabinet secretariat informed a member of Parliament from a regional party that his name had been recommended for oath-taking as a minister of state (with independent charge) and the official communication was being despatched to him by hand, the politician offered to collect the letter personally!

Despite repeated requests from the officials that he should not take the trouble of doing so, the MP told them that he had no problem in coming to the office and insisted that he would personally pick up the coveted letter. He thus, promptly landed up at the cabinet secretariat within a few minutes and took the letter.

While the bureaucrats were pretty amused at this act of desperation, what they probably didnt know was that the concerned MPs name was included in the list of ministers at the very last moment and he apparently did not want to take any chances.

Importance Of Independence
Even as Delhis political circles are still trying to resolve the mystery behind Congress spokesperson Kapil Sibal getting merely a minister of state (independent charge) berth and that too for science & technology and ocean development, eavesdropper learns that the eminent lawyers name was originally in the list of the minister of state.

It was only after some last minute fire fighting that he was upgraded to MoS with independent charge.
