Shera the friendly tiger will be the mascot for the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be hosted by Delhi, chairman of the organising committee of the Games Suresh Kalmadi announced here on Thursday.

Mr Kalmadi said the 15-minute cultural extravaganza at the closing ceremony of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games on March 26 would be sponsored by the Delhi government.

The programme, which would include several stars of the Indian entertainment industry, would be a great marketing opportunity for attracting sponsorship for the 2010 Games...Our effort would be to project Delhi as a great destination of Sports, he said.

A delegation of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), led by Sunil Munjal, will also be in Melbourne for the celebration.

Former cricket captain Kapil Dev has joined the list of sporting icons who will form part of the valedictory ceremony. We would also try to get our medal-winning athletes into the cultural segment, Mr Kalmadi said.

The event is expected to be watched by nearly two billion people worldwide and 10 giant screens will be set up at various locations in the city for people to watch the ceremony.

The event is conceptualised, produced and directed by Wizcraft International Entertainment and choreographed by Shiamak Davar. The songs for the closing ceremony have been penned by Javed Akhtar and Gulzar.
