Sensex gains 14 pts, Nifty ends lower

A lot of volatility was witnessed in the last hour of the trading session on Thursday, which also witnessed the expiry of the September derivatives contracts.

The benchmark indices ended on a mixed note with the Sensex gaining marginal ground, while the Nifty closing marginally in the red.

The 30-share Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) ended the day at 12,380.74, up 13.83 points or 0.11%. The broader S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) settled the day at 3,571.75, down 7.55 points.

Banking stocks were in the limelight as the BSE Bankex gained nearly 4% or 218 points to close above the 6,000-mark at 6,094.47.

The market breadth was strong with 1,355 stocks gaining ground on BSE, as against 1,134 losers. While the turnover on BSE was lower when compared to Wednesday, NSE clocked higher volumes than the previous day.

According to provisional figures, FIIs were net buyers at Rs 228.40 crore on Thursday, after pumping in Rs 410.43 crore on Wednesday.

However, the Sensex pack comprised of only 11 gainers and 19 losers.
