Sensex back to 16K level, banks lead

India's main stock index opened 0.53 percent higher on Friday, led by Reliance Industries and State Bank of India.

At 9:57 a.m., the main 30-share BSE index was up 0.64 percent, or 102.92 points, at 16,118.48, with 24 components rising. It rose as much as 0.94 percent.

The broader NSE index gained 1.16 percent to 4,886.25.
