Samsung India will begin manufacturing high-end flat screen PC monitors in India by July 2003. The company currently manufactures 19-inch TFT liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors at its facility and imports its higher-end flat screen and television (TV) monitors from its other manufacturing facilities around the world. Samsungs signature SyncMaster brand of monitors currently command a leading market share of 49 per cent in the domestic market, according to market retail audit figures.

The companys information technology (IT) business in India currently also has DVD drives, CD-ROM drivers, CD writers, hard disks, keyboards and mice, though monitors alone contribute about 45 per cent to sales from the IT business.

We plan to double exports of monitors from India by the end of this year from 7,000 units to 14,000 units per month, Samsungs IT head of products Sonal Anand told FE. Currently the total contribution of high end monitors in unit terms is close to 8 per cent while in value terms is close to 27 per cent. These include the SyncMaster 171S,191T, 152S, 1200NF, 1100P, 955DF, 955B.

The contribution from the high end flat screen TFT LCD Monitors is growing at a very fast pace, said Mr Anand.

A TV monitor is a result of product convergence, a process preoccupying all major electronics companies across the world.
