Samsung, Honda, Mercedes heads among invitees to Make in India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to kick-off the event…

Global chiefs of some of the world?s biggest companies, including European aircraft manufacturer Airbus, German car maker Mercedes-Benz, South Korean consumer goods firm Samsung Electronics and Japanese auto major Honda Motor Co, are among those invited to the Capital?s Vigyan Bhawan for the high-octane launch of the ?Make in India? campaign on September 25.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had made an impassioned plea to global manufacturers to set up base in India during his Independence Day address, is slated to kick-off the event, which aims to hard sell the country as a cost-competitive manufacturing hub to top corporates from both India and abroad.

The broader target audience is 3,000-odd manufacturing companies across the globe, and the Centre has already firmed up a panel of experts and nodal officers from across different departments to resolve problems faced by global firms while investing in India. The other target of the scheme, which is likely to be spelt out by Modi, is to ensure that at least 10 domestic companies attain global leadership in new technology in 30 priority sectors so that they can become part of the global value chain.

In a presentation at the event, Modi is expected to buttress his government?s strong intent to improve the environment for manufacturing activity, which, apart from delicensing and deregulation of sectors, would also focus on a ?quick response mechanism? to address concerns of investors. On the anvil is an ?investor wall? initiative ? a digital wall on the website of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion that will allow direct, real-time interaction between investors and officials of the department. Representatives of India Inc. who have been invited to the event include Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry, Anand Mahindra, CMD Mahindra Group, and Azim Premji, chairman Wipro Ltd. They will be present during the one-and-a-half hour event that starts at 10:30 am, when the PM would unfold plans to translate his call for ?come, make in India? into actionable achievement on the ground.

?The Prime Minister, along with other ministers, will also interact with industry CEOs over tea after the launch,? an official said. Industry chambers including Ficci, CII, PHDCCI, and Assocham have been sounded out to organise simultaneous state-level functions that would be attended by industrialists, while embassies abroad have been asked make arrangements to webcast the PM?s speech to industry representatives assembled there.

For the event at Vigyan Bhawan, elaborate preparations are being made to host CEOs from the US, Canada, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa, Asia and CIS nations. The Prime Minister?s speech, which will be in Hindi, will be translated to English, along with major languages such as German, French, Japanese, and Russian. Apart from the PM, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman are also expected to address the gathering.

?For the show, a digital wall is being created in Vigyan Bhawan. A couple of audio-visuals will be played to showcase the measures taken by the government so far to simplify doing business in India. The website, makeinindia.com, will go live simultaneously,? the official said. National broadcaster Doordarshan will live telecast the launch and a webcast of the same will also be available online.
