According to government sources, Salem has assured members of the team engaged in his interrogation that he will spill the beans, but has sought proper security in jail for doing so. Salem, currently housed in Mumbais Arthur road jail, fears specifically that gunmen belonging to Chhota Shakeel may target him sooner than later.
The jail already houses notorious inmates, many of whom have close links with the Dawood gang. Salem also fears that Dawood and his gang might try to terrorise his wife Monica Bedi so that Salem does not reveal information about the gang and its terrorist plans.
Meanwhile, the CBI is likely to take custody of Monica Bedi for five days on Thursday. A CBI petition had asked for the custody to glean details on the fake passport case. The main idea behind the move is to cross-verify the disclosures made by Abu Salem.
Salem is learnt to have revealed sensitive information on his movements, his links with various terrorist gangs, in particular the Dawood Ibrahim gang. But the CBI, is not taking this information at face value and is trying to verify his claims from all possible angles.
According to sources, CBI sleuths will try to convince Monica Bedi to turn approver and reveal to the court all the important information on the functioning of Abu Salem. This would amount to credible evidence for the investigating agency to prove Abu Salem guilty.
Salem, along with his wife Monica Bedi, was extradited from Portugal on November 11. It is learnt that the Portugal government was initially reluctant to extradite the two. But the strong evidences provided by the CBI to the Portuegese government and a three-year wait on the issue yielded results.
