On the lines of aviation sector, Railway ministry is developing an e-commerce platform to sell tickets and provide other commercial services. The move is aimed at augmenting e-ticketing services. At present Railways subsidiary Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) provides e-ticketing services and various complaints have been received regarding non-availability of reserved tickets.

To develop a single window commercial portal has been a well deliberated decision taken more than two years ago and is aimed at augmenting e-ticketing services in addition to other activities under the single window e-commerce platform, the ministry said in a press release on Thursday. The ministry said the new portal will supplement the existing services so as to cater to the increased passenger traffic and the demand for e-ticketing.

A similar set up already exists in the aviation sector where there are stand-alone ticketing portals as well as parent platforms where travellers can subscribe to value-added services offered by the carriers, it added.
