In a move to make its service system more efficient, the railways will use the Aadhaar database for bookings and validation of passengers. Apart from helping with ticketing and validation of genuine passengers with GPS-enabled handheld gadgets in trains, Aadhaar will offer a better interface for railway employees in regard to their salaries, pension and allowances. Rail minister PK Bansal said he had some discussion on potential applications of Aaadhar with Nandan Nilekani who is spearheading the project.

At present, Aadhaar is used as a valid proof of identity for passengers with tatkal tickets and e-tickets.
