Employees of the Reliance group were stunned by the illness of group patriarch Dhirubhai Ambani. Hoping for the best, staffers kept a close watch on Mr Ambanis condition through the day, monitoring it virtually every minute.

RIL group insiders told FE that Mr Ambanis illness had come as a shock to the family of employees across the group. They said the entire team at RIL looked up to the Reliance group patriarch as a role model and for guidance.

Said one of the younger members of the Reliance group team: Hardly a day passes when some senior employee or other does not narrate a story to us about Mr Dhirubhai Ambani. Some interesting anecdote from which they drew courage and inspiration. When a role model like this is ill, everyone is on tenterhooks.

Group insiders say the older among RIL employees, who know Mr Ambani closely, were completely in awe of the patriarch. They will do anything for him. They would not want to work anywhere else for the world. Such is the impact Dhirubhai Ambani has on the people who work with him.

Though his sons Mukesh and Anil are now firmly in charge of their respective areas of business at the Reliance group, insiders say the presence of Dhirubhai Ambani is a kind of guiding light for all at the Reliance group. People who have worked closely with him have been touched by him. There are so many stories of how he has patted someone on the back, encouraged someone else or guided yet another.

With the 69-year-old Dhirubhai Ambani now battling for life in hospital, generations of Reliance employees are hoping that the spirited fighter that he is, Mr Ambani will emerge unscathed from this crisis as well.
