REL, Essar may bid for transmission lines project

Barely two weeks after the power ministrys announcement to seek private sector participation in the power transmission segment, the state-run PowerGrid Corporation has floated tender for the establishment of transmission lines associated with the western region system strengthening scheme.

Leading players such as Reliance Energy, Essar Power, RPG groups KEC International, Kalpataru, newly formed Maharashtra State Transmission Company are expected to take part in the bidding process.

These projects, which would need a total investment of Rs 1,900 crore, include strengthening of transmission system in the politically influential south Maharshtra, comprising Pune, Pandharpur, Sholapur, Karhad, Parli and also in Gujarat. Companies would have to collect documents by January 20 and submit bids by May 22.

PowerGrid has projected the completion of these projects by 2008-09.With this tender, the original project conceived by PowerGrid to strengthen the WR transmission system with the investment of Rs 5,000 crore has been split up.
