Nasdaq-listed $666 million Rational Software Corp has set up a software engineering competency centre in Technopark here on Wednesday. This would be the companys first such move in India. It has taken similar steps in Singapore and Malaysia.

Rationals South Asia managing director Greg Lund said that the thrust of the new TSECC (Technopark Software Engineering Competency Centre) would be to nourish software talent pool in Kerala. States industry and IT minister PK Kunhalikutty opened the TSECC in Technopark on Wednesday.

TSECC will be managed by Astra Infotech Pvt Ltd. Rational India country manager MK Bharatee said the company will also lend a helping hand in infusing quality software engineering practices in Kerala governments e-governance initiatives. Rational would assist the government to define processes and provide a framework for unifying disparate governance projects, Mr Bharatee said.

In the short term, there would be two ventures. First, high level workshops will be held for policy makers and e-governance projects.

Second, as a proof of concept, technical and resource support will be given for a pilot project of the state government. In the long run, the agreement envisages Rational facilitating colleges to adopt software engineering as a part of their curriculum so as to build a substantial pool of trained software engineering professionals in Kerala.
