The recent announcement of Union railway minister Nitish Kumar that the Rangiya railway division would function from next year has come as a big relief for the people of Assam.

There has been a longstanding demand for the people of the state for a railway division in strategic Rangiya station and the delay in the announcement had caused consternation among the people.

The Rangiya railway division demand committee was formed with like-minded organisations joining to voice their desire for the railway division. The committee announced several rail blockades and bandhs on the strategic lower Assam rail line linking the entire north-east with the rest of the country.

But all fears regarding the delay were cleared when the railway minister on October 11 announced that the division would start operations from April next year. While the North East frontier railway had its division in West Bengal it was a long felt desire of the public to have a division in the area.
