It is good that America is giving India a waiver from the NPT (?It?s economics, stupid?, May 12). Yet, several aspects of the NPT need a rethink. First, since the treaty came into force in 1968, several technological developments have taken place in countries?both signatory and non-signatory?that have developed military nuclear capabilities. So, the NPT?s overall review is long overdue. Second, there has been controversy about the wordings of some of the treaty?s articles (example: ?to pursue negotiations in good faith?). Third, a thorough debate must define what exactly constitutes ?peaceful use of nuclear power?.
