A clear indication to this effect came at a meeting called by Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal to decide on the vexed issue. Gujarat formed a 'model land acquisition policy' after the state faced a spate of agitations by activists on this issue.
An official told FE the Punjab government intends to follow land ceiling on special economic zones (SEZ's). The state government under the new policy would no longer acquire land for an SEZ on the behalf of private developers. A significant clause of the proposed policy provides for a stake to the farmer in the development projects on the land acquired.
As a consequence to the policy, Badal may reverse his predecessor's decision to acquire 485 acres of land for a builder near Amritsar, despite clearance for SEZ projects in the state.
