Pune infrastructure gets pat from Premji

Pune received a pat from Wipro Corporation chairman Azim Premji. Mr Premji said that he has been visiting the city often and is happy to see that `infrastructure seems to have held out reasonably well.

Pune is taking off in software and BPO services as his company is expanding operations in the city, Mr Premji said. We have a workforce of 2,500 people, which has shot up over the last 18 months and we are significantly expanding presence in Pune, Mr Premji addded. In addition, Wipro also has 150 people in sales and marketing divisions of its various businesses in the city, he said. The city has always been known for excellence in automotive manufacturing and has been growing rapidly in the area of services as well, Mr Premji said. Jayashree Joglekar, COO-finance securities and head (Pune), Wipro, said that the companys facility at Infotech Park in Hinjewadi was expected to reach about 4,000 by the end of 2005-06.

Wipro, currently, has 1,000 people in IT services and 1,500 people in the BPO business. The existing facility has a capacity that can go up to 5,500 people.
