Procurement of paddy in Punjab tops 36 lakh tn

Paddy (de-husked rice) procurement in Punjab has crossed the 36-lakh tonne mark with highest purchases being reported from mandis in Ferozepur district. According to an official spokesman, till Sunday, procurement of paddy by six government agencies and traders reached 36,35,551 tonne in Punjab. He addded that PunGrain procured 8,52,296 tonne of paddy (26.4%) whereas MarkFed procured 7, 45,772 tonne of paddy (23.1%). PunSup procured 7, 43,224 tonne of paddy (23.0%), whereas the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation procured 4, 34,709 tonne (13.5%) and Punjab Agro purchased 4,05,795 tonne (12.6%).

The Food Corporation of India (FCI) procured only 45,732 tonne of paddy (1.4%). The mill-owners procured 4, 08,023 tonne of paddy (11.2 %) by Sunday. The mandis in Amritsar division procured 12,75,361 tonne of paddy with Kapurthala, recording maximum paddy purchases of around 3, 02,561 tonne. Ferozepurs mandis procured 19,16, 577 tonne of paddy.

The spokesman said that the six government agencies paid over Rs. 1,818.13 crore for paddy procured during the first 13 days of the current kharif marketing season that started on October 1. The spokesman said that farmers in the state received payment within 48 hours of lifting paddy from the procurement centres. The Punjab food supply department has set up 1,622 procurement centres throughout the state to ensure smooth procurement.
