If there is not enough rains, power consumer in Kerala will have to cough up extra surcharge, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission has cautioned. But there is yet to be such a panic call, says SERC chairman M K G Pillai.

The panel has also pulled up KSEB for revenue-gap estimate of Rs 492 cr for 2004-05. After its austerity measures, as per SERC, the boards revenue gap cannot be more than Rs 51.31 cr. Tightbelting in staff costs, pensions, depreciation, interests, power purchase agreements and other accounts should logically reflect in the final revenue gap. There has been Rs 94 cr, Rs 34 cr, Rs 65 cr and Rs 95 cr savings in staff costs, interest payments through debt-swapping, PPAs and other accounts respectively, Mr Pillai said.
