Indias potato yield could jump from the current 8 tonne per hectare to 12 tonne per hectare via measures such as improving supply of quality seed and use of drip irrigation and farm mechanisation, according to one of the biggest processors of agriculture commodities in the country. We have achieved productivity of 12 tonne per hectare through use of better seed and inputs around our intervention areas and by increasing yield we can increase annual output substantially, Prakash Lohia, MD, Vegit, a key player in the potato flakes sector, said. Lohia, ex-member, Central Potato Research Institute under the agriculture ministry, said the company is working with over 3,000 farmers across UP, Uttarakhand, Punjab and other states for steady supply of potatoes with low water and sugar content all year.
