Posco report by September end

The Meena Gupta Committee, which is probing into the implementation of Forest Right Act and the Rehabilitation & Re-settlement Policy in the proposed site for PoscoIndias 12 million tonne steel project, will submit its report by September 30. The committee has completed its hearing in Orissa and it will submit its report to the Union ministry of forest and environment (MoEF) by September 30, said Meena Gupta, former secretary of the MoEF who is heading the four-member Committee.

The Centre has also widened the ambit of the panel by asking it to review compliance status of the Environmental Protection Act at the site. The move comes just a couple of days after Patnaik met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and told reporters that he has been assured of a speedy clearance to the Rs 54,000-crore project Jagatsinghpur district as it involves the country's largest foreign direct investment (FDI).

The committee on Sunday discussed the issue with officials of the state government and also representatives of five political parties. The state principal secretary, forest and environment, Upendra Behera, principal secretary SC and ST welfare, Ashok Tripathy, IDCO chairman-cum-MD, Priyabrata Patnaik, revenue divisional commission (central range), Pradipta Mohaptara, and Jagatsinghpur district collector, Narayana Chandra Jena.
