PM To Open Summit On Gender Poverty

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will inaugurate a three-day summit on gender poverty in the Capital on Sunday. Participants from 30 countries will atten the summit. Sri Lankan president Chandrika Kumaratunga will also attend the summit.

Organised by Womens Policy Watch and the NCAER, the summit will examine the structural causes for the disturbing fact that 70 per cent of the worlds poor are women.

Speaking at a press conference, Womens Political Watch president Veena Nayyar said the summit would also explore the effect of globalisation on women. About 500 participants including academicians, non-government organisations and politicians like leader of Opposition Sonia Gandhi will attend the summit.
