Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the loss of lives in the Malaysian airline tragedy and said India stands with the families of victims in this hour of grief.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives on board Flight MH17. We stand with them in this hour of grief," he said in a tweet.

All 298 people on board the plane were killed after the jet was shot down by "terrorists" over war-torn eastern Ukraine near the Russian border. The incident that sharply raises the stakes in a conflict between Kiev and pro-Moscow rebels.

The Malaysia Airlines jetliner did not make any distress call, Malaysia's prime minister said on Friday, adding that its flight route had been declared safe by the global civil aviation body.
