Even as the Cabinet referred the Special Economic Zone Bill to the group of ministers, the Planning Commission is toying with the idea of creating five large special economic regions.

According to sources, the Commission would soon send a note to the commerce ministry to consider creation of five or six very large special economic regions instead of SEZs.

The proposed economic regions would be set up covering an area of around 5-10,000 acres of land with world-class infrastructure and would not be meant for exports only, the sources said.
