Chennai Customs has launched a new software module to monitor the container movement from Chennai port to the inland container depots (ICD) and container freight stations (CFS). The movement of export containers also is streamlined through a CFS to avoid traffic snarls on road leading to the port.

The in-gate and out-gate of the Chennai Container Terminal Ltd (CCTL) have been provided computer connectivity and linked to the custom house server.

This facility eliminates delays in processing transshipment requests, cuts down paper work and leads to greater transparency and helps the department in effective monitoring.

Elaborating the operational aspect of the system, Ennarasu Karunesan, chief executive officer of CCTL said, the importer or his agent can now submit the request for movement of container from the port to the destination, an ICD or CFS, in a floppy at the service centre of custom house for data entry. The details will be electronically transmitted to the concerned sections of the Custom Department for online verification and grant of permission for transshipment of the container.
