Oil & Natural Gas Corp Ltd (ONGC) plans to acquire another seismic survey boat to reduce its dependence on outside contractors, according to sources in the navaratna company. The sources declined to comment on the project cost, saying it is yet to be finalised. Normally, such a high-tech ship costs around Rs 250 crore.

ONGC has not yet drawn up the bid tender, but plans to ask delivery of the ship within 18 months of the date it places the order.

ONGCs German consultants, Schiffko GmbH, has advised it to start with a four-streamer dual source vessel with onboard data processing facilities. A dual-source vessel tows a floating streamer studded with seismic equipment so that a greater distance can be covered.
