In India, the government is always silent to what is going on in the international oil market (?World view?, May 17). It should now wake up to the volatile international price trends. In the backdrop of market fluctuations, oil marketing companies are running out of options to survive the unbearable subsidy trauma. Worst of all, the country?s biggest private oil marketing company has closed all of its fuel outlets after incurring a heavy loss due to the lop-sided government-mandated prices. So, the government should come to terms with the ground reality and take all the possible steps to support both public and private sectors oil companies.

Lost opportunities
