OBC Census: social justice ministry to approach RGI

A day after the Supreme Court stayed the implementation of 27% quota for OBCs in higher educational institutions, the ministry of social justice and empowerment moved in quickly to prepare a proposal to approach the Registrar General of India (RGI) for conducting a Census of OBCs in the country.

A proposal in this regard is likely to be sent by next week, first to the Prime Ministers Office (PMO) for clearance, following which it would be forwarded to the RGI.

Ministry sources, however, maintained that the proposal was in the pipeline for some time now and that yesterdays Supreme Court verdict had only hastened matters.

Since the schemes for the welfare of the OBCs have been incorporated with substantial fund, the ministry, as the nodal agency to implement them, had been thinking of getting their exact number for proper implementation.
