Upset by the Congress allegation that Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje is of Nepali origin, the BJP workers here are out to lecture anyone who stops by to lend an ear.

Neither Ms Raje nor her late mother Vijaya Raje Scindia is of Nepali origin, said BJP supporters. Congress spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal had recently alleged that Ms Raje was a person of Nepali origin.

RJD leader Laloo Prasad Yadav had also earlier said that the Maharani of Gwalior and mother of Vasundhra Raja, late Vijaya Raje Scindia was a direct descendant of Nepal royal family, and therefore the chief minister was also a Nepali by origin. Vijaya Raje was one of the founders of the erstwhile Jan Sangh and BJP.

Vijaya Raje Scindia was born in Sagar in a Rana household a noble class under the Nepali royalty. Vijaya Rajes mother Churamani was married to Mahendra Singh, a thakur of the Gwalior household.

The Ranas were Rajputs with Indian roots, but migrated to Nepal some two- three centuries back. They became a branch of the Nepali royal family tree with many serving as generals in the elite Nepali Army -which enjoyed a special status. This bond was further strengthened with a number of Rana women entering the Nepalese royal family through marriages.
