What is impressive about American democracy is not the variety of views, of which there is very little, as much as the fact that Barack Obama is still the leading contender for the next presidentship despite the identity discomfort so many conservative US citizens are said to be feeling. Also, his hypothesis about why Americans ?cling? to guns and religion (?World View?, Apr 16) has not retarded his electoral prospects to the extent a similar claim in India could.
