No SEZ proposal at Nandigram

The Centre on Monday said there is no proposal to set up a special economic zone (SEZ) at Nandigram in West Bengal, where fresh violence erupted on Sunday over the issue of land acquisition for industrial projects.

No SEZ is being set up at Nandigram. Also, there is no application proposing to set up an SEZ at Nandigram, a commerce ministry statement said.

It said certain reports have been appearing in a section of the press regarding opposition to setting up of an SEZ at Nandigram. Nandigram witnessed renewed violence on Sunday in which three people were killed in a bomb blast during a bandh being observed in the area at the call of an organisation opposing land acquisition for industries. Due to violent protests over land acquisition for the project, the state government had to withdraw a proposal from Indonesias Salim Group.
