With a deluge of new investments in Chhattisgarh, approximately Rs 10,000 crore alone in the iron and steel sector, the state government wants the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) to restrict iron ore export to Japan and other countries from Bailadila mines.

Besides, several iron and steel units in the state are facing shortage of raw material and have been importing iron ore from Orissa and Jharkhand. The crisis may aggravate further as Chhattisgarh is planning to produce 12 lakh metric tonne of iron and steel by 2008. We will need more iron ore chief minister Raman Singh said.

Mr Singh met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh two days back and conveyed his reservations. We want our rightful share of minerals from Bailadila mines, he told the PM. Bailadila alone has 50% of the iron ore deposits in the state, of which nearly 30% is exported to Japan and China.
