Coach Greg Chappell sought to justify pushing Sachin Tendulkar to the middle order and said it was important for him to fit into his new role ahead of the World Cup. Chappell said Tendulkars experience would prove handy in the middle overs while also backing Sourav Ganguly to come good in his ODI comeback.

It is a challenge for Sachin and is something the team needs. We need balance and experience in the middle order, he said. The coach said the team was banking on Ganguly to come good at the top of the order. Chappell said the team decided for a left-handed opening pair based on the requirement of the team.
