Nine essential items, including kerosene, witnessed negative wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation rate in 2004-05 against the previous fiscal.

The 52-week average of inflation of rice, gram, onion, mustard oil, groundnut oil, moong, urad, chillies, besides kerosene was negative in 2004-05 compared to 2003-04, official sources said.

On the other hand, wholesale price-based inflation rate of potato, tea, sugar, salt and gur, coconut oil and coking coal has been more than 10% last fiscal compared to the previous financial year, the sources said.

In respect of potato, tea, salt and gur this was due to the fact that their prices had fallen in the previous year and only recovered to their normal levels in 2004-05, they said. Thus, potato prices rose at the rate of 52.9% in 2004-05 compared to -41.4% in the previous fiscal.
