On the eve of talks with its ally Congress on government formation in Maharashtra, the NCP on Wednesday insisted on the 1999 portfolio-sharing formula under which it had held the post of the deputy chief minister and key portfolios including home, finance, power and public works department.

In the area of number of ministers there could be room for negotiations but not in the area of portfolios, NCP general secretary PA Sangma told reporters here.

His remarks come shortly before the NCPs formal talks with the Congress for government formation in Maharashtra where the two parties returned to power for the third consecutive term. The Congress won 82 seats while the NCP 62. Sangma said the NCP had authorised senior leader and civil aviation minister Praful Patel to lead the talks with senior Congress leaders.
