Nafed to export onions to arrest fall in prices

To check the sliding prices of onion, Nafed would export onions to Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Mauritius.

Nafed will adopt proper marketing strategy to export the procured onions to these countries, minister of state for commerce Jairam Ramesh told the Upper House on Wednesday.

Furore over FDI in retail trade

The Opposition in the House vociferously opposed any move to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in general retail trade and demanded a full discussion on the issue.

The matter cropped during the question hour when commerce minister Kamal Nath said the Centre has allowed FDI up to 51% with prior government approval in the retail trade of single brand products.

The commerce ministersought to allay concerns that domestic retail trade would be affected saying there was no FDI in general retail trade.

No decision to pull out troops from Siachen

There is no decision at present to pull out troops from the Siachen glacier, defence minister Pranab Mukherjee said.

A ceasefire has been in force on the actual ground position line in the Siachen area since the midnight of November 25, 2006, Mr Mukherjee said in a written reply, adding that there is no decision at present to pull out troops from the worlds highest battlefield.

Only India has trade deficit among BRIC nations

India is the only country among the bric economies to have trade deficit in 2005, the Rajya sabha was informed on Wednesday.

According to WTO data for 2005, among the group of four countries that is Brazil, India, China and Russia (BRIC), India is the only country which has trade deficit, minister of state for commerce Jairam Ramesh said in a written reply.

Indias deficit stood at $ 41.8 billion in 2005, according to World Trade Organisation data, while Brazil had a surplus of $ 40.7 billion.

Situation in Kashmir hasimproved

Asserting that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir had improved considerably and the atmosphere there was conducive to peace, the government on Wednesday told the Rajya Sabha that troop withdrawal from the border state would depend on the threat perception.
