Musharraf Sends 10 Cases of Mangoes!

You can call it the General’s mango diplomacy. Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf has sent 10 cases of choicest mangoes for the top Indian leadership. No prizes for guessing the general’s mailing list. It includes President APJ Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The mangoes are Mr Musharraf’s boldest gambit yet to communicate a gesture of goodwill to New Delhi.

Sources said the delicate shipment could not be shipped directly to Delhi, because the air corridors between India and Pakistan remain closed. Therefore, the mangoes, cased in individual boxes of green and yellow, had to be brought in via Dubai. Pakistan International Airline (PIA) was entrusted with this part of the task. The shipment landed in a PIA A-300 in the late hours of Sunday night. Since the message from Karachi to Dubai authorities was explicit enough—that this was a very important shipment directly from President Musharraf—the cargo was not checked for security. The 10 cartons, were directly loaded on to a waiting Indian Airlines A-320, even as securitymen watched on the sidelines. IA put the mangoes last, so that they were the first item to be retrieved when the A-320 landed in Delhi.
