Mettur Water Till Sept 30

The plan to cultivate about 16 lakh acres in the Cauvery delta and adjoining districts got a boost with an assured supply of water in Cauvery till September 30.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday ordered release of 16,000 cusecs of water from the Mettur reservoir till September 30, 2004, to meet the irrigation requirement of Cauvery delta region farmers for the long-term samba paddy crop.

``Water would be released at the rate of 16,000 cusecs from today (Thursday) till September 30 in response to appeals made by the farmers,'' she said.

The Chief Minister said one tmc ft of water was released per day from August 12 to 18 and increased to 1.5 tmc ft for the next six days to enable cultivation of samba crop.

Ms Jayalalithaa said she had also ordered release of water at the rate of 120 cusecs each in Pullambadi and new Kattalai canal to irrigate 8,831 acres and 8338 acres of lands under their ayacuts respectively in Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur and Thanjavur districts.
