MGVCL officials said Shaukatbhai Agadi (50) was not ready to pay the dues and had even threatened their staff when they approached him in the past to collect the amount or cut the electricity connection.
On Friday, around 10 MGVCL officials accompanied by a team of over two dozens of policemen landed at Jehangirpura in Wadi area where Agadi lives. But as they tried to enter his house, they met with resistance from local residents who also allegedly threatened and hurled abuses on them.
When the team persisted, Agadi tried to immolate himself by pouring kerosene over his body.
The policemen, however, prevented him from doing so, Wadi police inspector MP Rathod said.
He and his family members threatened to beat up MGVCL staff and hurled abuses, Rathod said.
Agadi had ben arrested and booked under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code for attempting to commit suicide.
