L&T and PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (PHDCCI) are in talks to provide training to 25,000 people in North India in the next five years. This comes after the finance minister Pranab Mukherjee called on India Inc to participate in the government's skill development initiatives and help create a pool of trained manpower.

Ashok Kajaria, PHDCCI president told FE, "We are planning to focus on 11 states of north India and will take the initiative of providing vocational training to people. The chamber and the company will work together and train people in handling small machines, carpentry, electric fittings and other similar field".

Kajaria said that with the country emerging as an economic superpower, it would require additional 500 million skilled people in various sectors in the coming years. He said that the industry body in association with Delhi-based Grass Academy is already providing such training in areas like plumbing, carpentry, ginning and electricity wiring.
