The decision of the Gujarat government on compulsory voting in local elections is neither viable nor desirable. There can be various reasons for not voting. For one, voters are not being offered true democracy; often they have to choose from among tainted candidates. Besides, how can there be free and fair elections when most political parties field candidates with criminal backgrounds In recent state elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh, many MLAs who faced criminal charges did win. The people have little choice. Constitutionally, candidates with criminal background must not be allowed to contest elections.
