HRD minister Kapil Sibal has proposed to make class 10 board examination optional and setting up of a single school board at the national level for a uniform examination for class 12. He said the reforms are aimed at detraumatising education. This move will certainly ignite a national debate. The HRD minister should tread carefully before making any drastic change in the existing student evaluation system. While his aim is laudable, it should not create more problems. Again, if we consider his proposal, the trauma will be postponed just by two years until the students reach the 12th standard. Overloading the children is the root cause for the trauma. One way to get around the issue is to reduce the number of schooling days.
