With inflation touching 6.12% on Friday, the Left as well as the BJP jumped in to criticise the government for failure to control price rise. Taking the opportunity to reiterate their demand of a further reduction in the oil price, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said, To control the situation the government should immediately reduce the oil price. Talking to reporters here, he added that this is the apt time for the government to think of more curbs on future trading.

The BJP, on the other hand, said the government had betrayed the people on its common man plank. The inflation figure which has been announced today is based on wholesale price index. But the consumer prices are much higher, as prices of daily consumption items like wheat, rice, pulses and edible oils have doubled during two and half years of UPA rule in the country, said party spokesperson Prakash Javedkar.

This is a record of short and has impacted purchasing power of common man and thus has affected standard of living, he said. Critically observing the Congress rule in the country, Javedkar said, People are again experiencing the fact that whenever Congress comes to power prices rise.

Responding to the rise in inflation, which has crossed the 6 % mark for the first time in two years, the Congress said it hoped that the Centre would soon take steps to normalise the price index.
