Jack Straw Meets Sonia

Opposition leader and Congress president Sonia Gandhi has told the visiting British foreign secretary Jack Straw that cross-border terrorism and unremitted violence in Jammu & Kashmir is a matter of national concern. She also informed him that her party supports the government stand in combating terrorism and violence.

Briefing the press about the meeting, party spokesman Anand Sharma said here on Wednesday that Ms Gandhi also told Mr Straw that all issues between New Delhi and Islamabad will eventually be settled through negotiations.

The British foreign secretary met with Ms Gandhi to discuss the evolving situation in the sub-continent and also to apprise her of the discussions he has had in Islamabad with Pakistani President Musharraf.

During the 45-minute meeting, he was accompanied by the British high commissioner in India and other officials while Ms Gandhi was accompanied by Mr Natwar Singh.

Mr Sharma said Mr Straw expressed the hope that all outstanding Indo-Pak issues will be resolved bilaterally.
