At 60, the State of Israel faces many challenges, as Shlomo Ben-Ami writes (?Israel as a missionary state?, May 6). But must Zionism always form an ideological basis for their addressal? No. A secular impulse exists, as he admits. Is the State, regardless of its military/economic dependence on the US, to be a bona fide instrument of its citizens? independent aspirations? Is majority-rule democracy satisfying these aspirations adequately? And importantly, will Israel ever make peace its priority or remain stuck in history?

No bio-crusade

The push for biofuels is the big problem (?First, the food facts?, May 6) that must be dealt with if we are to obliterate hunger in the world. This is a ?new deal? we can all agree on.
