Irregularities in foreign ministry cost dear

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has pointed out a number of irregularities in the functioning of the external affairs ministry which resulted in a loss of several crore, including Rs 2.54 crore on account of employment of local staff at some missions.

The missions and posts abroad continued to employ staff and paid from contingencies and local staff in disregard of the rules and regulations. The move resulted in unauthorised expenditure of Rs. 2.54 crore.

It said the persistent non-compliance with the ministrys instructions for not holding cash balance in excess of requirement by overseas missions and posts despite audit observations on a number of occasions in the past resulted in loss of interest of Rs 1.79 crore.
