Inflation Touches 5.56 Per Cent

The annual rate of inflation continued to climb upwards and touched a new high for this fiscal at 5.56 per cent for the week ended March 15. The rise as compared to last week was 0.43 per cent but year-on-year the increase was 3.93 per cent.

The wholesale price index (WPI), after a slight decline in week ended March 8, went up by 0.4 per cent to 170.8. The increase was mostly driven by the rise in prices of metals, non-metallic minerals, metal products and textiles.

The index for primary articles and manufactured products went up by 0.4 per cent to 178.4 and 150.1 per cent respectively. In primary articles category, the index for food articles rose by 0.4 per cent due to a 3 per cent increase in the prices of fruits and vegetables, and 2 per cent increase in the prices of bajra, barley, gram and mutton.
