India has expressed hope that Iraq will abide by the new UN Security Council resolution on disarming it and said sanctions against Baghdad should be lifted in tandem with full and effective compliance of relevant resolutions.

We welcome the unanimous adoption of resolution 1441 by the UN Security Council which provides for disarmament of Iraq as laid down in relevant resolutions and also reaffirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq, Kuwait and neighbouring states, a foreign affairs ministry spokesman told mediapersons.

The UNSC had last Friday adopted the tough US-sponsored resolution with President George Bush grimly warning that Iraq must now without delay or negotiations fully disarm.

Capping two months of hard negotiations among the council members, the resolution was voted 15-0 after Russia and France shed their reservations and agreed to the new draft proposed by the US. We hope that Iraq will comply with its provisions. We believe that sanctions against Iraq should be lifted in tandem with full and effective compliance by it with the relevant UNSC resolutions, the spokesman said.
