Sugar export at 13.51L tonne in first half of 2011-12

India exported 13.51 lakh tonnes of sugar in the first six months of the 2011-12 marketing year ending September, Parliament was informed on Monday. The country had exported 28.14 lakh tonnes in the entire 2010-11 marketing year (October-September). Food minister KV Thomas said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha that about 13.51 lakh tonnes of sugar has been exported till March, 2012 of the current sugar season. Govt favours suggestion to export 2 mt wheat

The food ministry has supported the suggestion of Rangarajan panel to allow export of 2 million tonnes of wheat from government stocks immediately to ease pressure on storages, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday. Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, food minister KV Thomas said the prime minister had constituted an expert group headed by Prime Ministers Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC) chairman C Rangarajan to suggest ways to ease pressure that record foodgrain production had created on storages.

Onion output estimated at 15.7 mt in 2011-12: Thomas

Onion production in India is estimated to rise by nearly 2 tonnes to 15.7 million tonnes in the 2011-12 crop year. Production of onion as per estimates made is likely to be of in the order of 15.7 million tonnes during 2011-12 (July-June), food Minister KV Thomas said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha. India ranks second in the world in production of onion. Maharashtra and Gujarat are the main producing regions of the kitchen staple. The output of the bulb in the country was about 13 million tonnes in the 2010-11 crop year.

Govt fixes R68k-cr FY13 turnover target for MMTC

The government has fixed R68,000 crore as turnover target for the state-owned trading firm MMTC during the 2012-13 fiscal. MMTCs turnover was Rs 65,882 crore last fiscal, and R68,854 in 2010-11, minister of state for commerce and industry Jyotiraditya Scindia said in a written reply in Lok Sabha, while stating the FY13 target. The company, which trades in commodities including iron ore, gold and pulses, has jewellery showrooms in various parts of the country.

UP sugar mills owe farmers R3,328 cr for 2011-12 season

Sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh owe cane farmers about R3,328 crore in dues for the 2011-12 season ending October. As on May 16, an amount of Rs 3,328 crore is pending against sugar mills of Uttar Pradesh for the sugarcane purchased during 2011-12 season, food minister KV Thomas said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. Besides, an amount of R143.48 crore is due against sugar mills for the sugar seasons from 1994-95 to 2010-11, he said.
