To me Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) signifies the inspiration and the sole factor that led to the growth of a small-time vendor like me. Having begun as a small-timer in the power sector just after passing out from class IX, today I have a order book of more than 1,200 crores as on March 31 2009, all because of the support and inspiration provided to me by BHEL. The company manufactures over 180 products under 30 major product groups and caters to core sectors of the Indian economy, including power generation and transmission, industry, transportation, telecommunication, renewable energy and others. The high level of quality and reliability of its products is due to the emphasis on design, engineering and manufacturing to international standards by acquiring and adapting some of the best technologies from leading companies in the world, together with technologies developed in its own R&D centres. I admire the company for the vendor development it has provided in the power sector, leading to the growth of almost 80-90% of the vendors. Their sound technical know-how and the support it provides to the people associated with it is commendable. Even if an associate vendor falls short of technical knowledge or support, BHEL doesnt hesitate in providing the required support.
Under the guidance of its current Chairman Ravi Kumar, the company has introduced the away centre fabrication (ACF) that has increased the production from one lakh metric tonnes to two lakh metric tonnes last year and this year they are aiming for four lakh metric tonnes including outsourcing. ACF has led to huge savings in logistics. The trust and faith they put in their vendors is reassuring and leads to growth across sectors. The company is trustworthy and free from corruption. I also admire its present chairman due to his growth from the grass-root level, making him connect with the junior most employee of his organisation that gives a balanced growth and positive outlook to the company.
