Hutch begins replacing BPL mobile brand

Hutchison Essar has begun the process of extinguishing the BPL brand and replacing it with the Hutch brand in the circles acquired with Rajeev Chandrasekhars BPL Mobile.

Maharashtra & Goa circles of BPL Mobile Cellular Ltd have been converted to Hutch.

Hutchison had acquired Maharashtra & Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu with its buyout of the BPL business from Essar. Hutch has tied up with Nokia for swapping sites enabling GPRS and Edge enabled technologies. Sunil Sood, operations director, Maharashtra & Goa, Rajasthan and Gujarat, Hutchison Essar, said existing BPL subscribers will recieve value added services of Hutch including voice recognition services, hi-end mobile games and multi-player games. New tariff plans will be announced by the company in the next few days. Mr Sood said the company would focus on gaining a subscriber base in the rural markets.

Rajiv Kohli, chief executive officer, Maharashtra & Goa, BPL Mobile, said subscribers could expect a congestion free network in the next 90 days. Hutchison now has a presence in 16 circles in the country.

The company is working towards expanding and enhancing the network and service levels in this circle. The number of towers will be doubled from the existing 500 in the next few months. Work on 120 sites has already been completed, said Mr Sood.

He however, declined to divulge the investments involved in the expansion process.
